Plugable’s Latest Docking Station Can Drive Four Hi-Res Screens At 60Hz
Plugable is a peripherals brand that I’ve featured quite a few times before. The company produces a wide range of docks and hubs for people who need to expand their laptop or desktop computer so that it can drive extra screens or enjoy increased connectivity through extra ports.
The latest docking station from Plugable is the all-new UD-3900C4 USB-C Quad HDMI. With up to 100W of charging power the docking station is designed to extend productivity by being able to drive up to four screens by using DisplayLink technology and Multi-Stream Transport (MST) for HD displays.
Designed with power users in mind, the new docking station is an ideal solution for cutting back on desk clutter and adding external displays. The UD-3900C4 can extend a laptop screen with up to four additional displays, transforming a simple set-up into an impressive command center. The docking station uses DisplayLink technology to drive the first two screens and Multi-Stream Transport (MST) through DisplayPort Alt Mode for the third and fourth displays.
If you’re a Mac user, I should point out that Macs don’t support MST, so the docking station will just display the same mirrored screen on third and fourth outputs. With the UD-3900C4, all four displays can support 1080p resolution with a refresh rate of 60Hz.
As well as running four additional monitors, the UD-3900C4 supports 100W charging (96W Certified) on supported USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 systems. There’s also a selection of ports including one USB-C with data and 20W charging for newer peripherals, plus four additional USB 3.0 ports for connecting legacy peripherals. With data transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps, these ports ensure provide scope to plug in and power up. Other ports include an SD 4.0 card reader, an Ethernet port, a 3.5mm audio-out jack and a 3.5mm audio-in jack.
The UD-3900C4 is compatible with USB4, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, and USB-C systems that support Multi-Stream Transport (MST) through DisplayPort Alt Mode. To get the full features of the UD-3900C4 the system needs to be running Windows 10 or later with four 1080p displays at 60Hz. With macOS 10+, the UD-3900C4 can drive three screens at 1080p with a 60Hz refresh rate, including first-generation M1 Macs. DisplayPort MST is not supported on macOS, so there’s a maximum of 3 extended displays with the fourth display mirrored.
Pricing & Availability: The Plugable UD-3900C4 Docking Station is available now and costs $349 from Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, Newegg, Walmart, and eBay.
