Elite Optimus Prime Offers Self-Transforming Fun For Less Of Your Hard-Earned Energon
Update 10/21/22: Comparison image between Flagship and Elite toys, price and availability information
Last year, Robosen collaborated with Hasbro to give Transformers fans something that they never knew they wanted, a self-transforming version of the Autobot leader, Optimus Prime. App-powered, it can say phrases recorded by Peter Cullen (who’s been the character’s voice since the original 80’s cartoon), strike poses, and, yes, transform and roll out.
What it can’t do is save your wallet. At over $1,000 it’s out of the reach of many fans.
That’s why today’s announcement of a new, slightly smaller, less-expensive version of the same toy comes as welcome news.
What Is It?
Elite Optimus Prime is a 16-inch, self-transforming, app powered version of the Transformers character from the original cartoon. Just like the original, 19-inch “Flagship” version, Elite Optimus Prime is comprised of 5,000 components, 60 microchips, and 27 servo motors.
It comes with 80 phrases recorded by original Transformers voice actor, Peter Cullen and 43 pre-installed voice commands with which you can activate actions. Even better, you can program additional actions via the app to personalize your experience.
So It’s The Same, But Shorter?
Elite Optimus Prime is smaller than the Flagship model, which means less weight, which means it can transform and move quicker than the original toy as Sean Tan, Director of Robosen USA, points out in the press release.
“We are excited to bring this lighter, more compact Optimus Prime to fans of the franchise. The re-engineered scale offers a smooth, fast conversion, making the Elite Optimus Prime more agile and speedy, which we’re thrilled to once again bring to life for all our fans and customers, through our collaboration with Hasbro.”
The 16-inch scale also brings Elite Optimus Prime more in scale with fans’ collections. It’s still quite a bit larger than the 9.5-inch Masterpiece Optimus Prime (which sets the scale for many collections) but not so large that it seems out of place.
Comparing the two, it appears that Robosen has poured the same amount of care and detailing into Elite Optimus Prime that they did with the Flagship version. In fact, I think the Elite Prime is better proportioned in both robot and truck mode than the larger version. Elite Optimus Prime also has the same LEDs and rubber tires of the original.
Elite Optimus Prime also comes with the energon axe and weapon accessories of the original as well as a protective case so that you can safely transport it when you go to your friends’ houses to make them jealous.
And, oh yeah, it can transform itself with a single command.
Where Can I Get It?
With the release of the Elite Optimus Prime, Robosen has moved the original Flagship Optimus Prime into a higher price tier, now with an eye-watering MSRP of $1,200. Elite Optimus Prime is almost half that at $699.
For now, the larger version can still be found at places like Hasbro’s own HasbroPulse.com for $750 but once they sell out, they’ll no longer be available. The Elite version will be available at most online mass-market retailers for the foreseeable future.
The $699 MSRP is a good move and more in line with what the market is willing to pay. Recent sales and deals on the original Prime have been around this price. I’m willing to bet we’ll see similar deals as we get closer to the holidays, bringing this bot into more consumers’ budget ranges.
Especially with Hasbro’s current financial outlook issues, offering a less expensive but equally capable version of a highly sought after toy is a step in the right direction. Casey Collins, GM and SVP of Global Consumer Products at Hasbro, had this to say about the collaboration.
“We are equally excited to have teamed up again with the talented team over at Robosen! These premium products unlock an all-new category for our TRANSFORMERS product portfolio, showcasing our new Blueprint 2.0 strategy by helping unleash the potential of this beloved franchise. With the Elite Optimus Prime, fans can indulge in an elevated branded entertainment experience,”
Now fans will just have to sit tight and wait (somewhat) patiently for Robosen to work their same re-engineering magic on Optimus Prime’s self-transforming trailer and drone.
You can roll out to the Robosen site and grab Elite Optimus Prime right now. If you’re a Hasbro Pulse member and prefer to keep all your Transformers purchases in one place, just sit tight. While Hasbro hasn’t announced availability yet, I’m certain that it’ll be up on the site soon.
