EBay Sellers Charging Up To $1,000 For $100 Bottles Of Elon Musk’s Burnt Hair Perfume

At least 24 sellers on eBay are offering Elon Musk’s new Burnt Hair perfume at markups of as much as ten times the official cost of $100.

The Tesla billionaire began offering the new perfume on the website for his Boring Co. on Tuesday, and claimed to have sold 10,000 bottles of a scent described as “the essence of repugnant desire” within hours of launching. At $100 a pop, that’s $1 million in sales.

The launch, as Forbes has written, continued Musk’s “record of capitalizing on humor and his enthusiastic fan base to transform seemingly joke products into coveted merchandise.” On Twitter, he quickly changed his bio to “Perfume Salesman.”

By Wednesday morning, some two dozen sellers on eBay had launched their own resale campaigns at prices far above the official one. A new seller named “chieflit” was offering the product “brand new” for $1,000 or best offer. EBay’s site showed that one of the seller’s four bottles available had already sold. The seller’s ability to jack up the price so high is a testament to the cult of Elon.

Other sellers were offering the perfume for a wide variety of prices, all well above Musk’s official price. The Boring Co. has not said how long it planned to keep the perfume listed—so eBay sellers may be hoping to have something valuable if it becomes a quasi-collector’s item. Or maybe they just think no one will realize the offering prices are insane.

Ebay’s price-gouging policy prohibits “offering items at a price higher than is considered fair or reasonable.” The rules are especially focused on prohibiting sellers from profiting off inflated prices for essential items during an emergency, which a joke perfume clearly is not. The company did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
